The Bird’s Nest in Beijing

"The Beijing National Stadium has been nicknamed the 'bird's nest' due to the web of twisting steel sections that form the roof."

“It is situated in Olympic Green Village, Chaoyang District, Beijing. It was designed as the main stadium of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The Olympic events of track and field, football, gavelock, weight throw and discus were held there. Since October, 2008, after the Olympics ended, it has been opened as a tourist attraction. Now, it's the center of international or domestic sports competition and recreation activities.”

Prior to seeing the Beijing Stadium, I was so excited because I could finally see it live. As they say, great architecture can never be fully conveyed through a television screen. I only saw it on TV and I was amazed how big it was and the design was very impressive. I just can’t wait to see the famous intertwined steel roof.

Wintertime is categorically not the best time to visit the stadium. I waited 6 years to see the stadium. Unfortunately, I didn’t see it in all its glory. Bad timing. The weather was bad. It was closed to the public. I got to see it from a distance.

The tour guide dropped us at the nearest overpass to get a view of the “bird’s nest”. It was foggy outside. I didn’t have a good view. I wasn’t even able to take a decent photo. Nevertheless, I’ve seen it. It was a "been there done that" activity. But I was not a happy camper.
