Just between Halloween and Christmas is a very important holiday called Thanksgiving Day. Celebrating it at home with the family is so easy as long as there are sumptuous food on the table, a sit down dinner will suffice.
My workplace is a fun place because instead of the usual potluck party, we rented out a buffet restaurant where everyone can indulge to their hearts' desire.
However, before that date comes, thank you cards were made available for all employees so they can write sweet notes to colleagues who made a difference in their lives. It's always nice when someone you know pays you a genuine compliment .
We always believe in the values:
excellence and doing the right thing.
Doing something nice for others can truly be overwhelming. At times, the little things we do can really make someone else's day.
Indeed, "Thanksgiving" can be a great change of pace and provide a much-needed break.
Thanksgiving, showing your thankfulness for one another this holiday season is the best thing you can do to celebrate.
Manila was the home of RBL.ION, the biggest unconference: RBL.ION.MNL
I was lucky to have been invited to join this event. This was not the predictable conference that most people are used to attending. It involved wild thinking of sorts.
It was a gathering of an assembly of the advanced people who make certain that the ecosystems will be brought into being to thrive and prosper. They were a mixed of artists, entrepreneur, inventors and investors coming from different fields.
The experience I had was a chaos in a good way (if there is such a thing). In point of fact it was a well thought-out mayhem. Everything was a combination of live experiences with niche activities.
I specifically listened to 4 speakers whom I found very interesting:
Carlos Celdran, a Filipino tour guide, cultural activist and performing artist,
3. Paco Guerrero, editorial and commercial photographer and cinematographer based in Manila. He is also the Executive Editor of GRID Magazine.
4. Kenneth Cobonpue, a multi-awarded furniture designer and manufacturer from Cebu. He graduated in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute in New York with highest honors and subsequently worked in Italy and Germany.
Their focus was so simple: to teach, guide and inspire. They all started by exploring the meaning of Rebel and Rebellion.
The event was produced by A SPACE, the Philippines leading cowork + collaboration project. It happened last Oct 28-29th, 2016 at CITEM Manila.
There was a time in the past when people want to travel and see new places in and out of the country but are hesitant because they worry about the accommodation rates. Those days are gone because of the proliferation of guesthouses and hostels in most of the famous cities and other tourists attractions on the globe.
One good thing about staying in a hostel is it lets you save an ample amount of money and another is, it enables you to intermingle with other like-minded travelers. Which of course leads you to learning some local recommendations, consequently makes your stay extra authentic.
I recently stayed at BGC Hostel Makati. By and large, it is very affordable compared to other hostels around the city. BGC Hostel Makati has all the amenities that are very essential for all the guests. It has private and shared rooms, there’s communal area which allows travelers to meet new interesting people who may turn out to be future friends or travel buddies on their next voyage. Shared kitchen is also available where guests can cook their own food instead of always eating out at the fast food which lets them save a large sum of money. Another very important thing that I noticed was the hostel’s strong wi-fi connection. I managed to write 2 articles for my blog during my stay there.
The staff treats all guests like family. They are very warm and friendly. BGC Hostel Makati’s top priority is providing security and safety to all their guests so they can have a worry free and comfortable experience. The security option of this hostel range from safes behind reception, lockers in the rooms, electronic swipe cards for door rooms, 24-hour security on site and CCTVs recording common areas.
One vital aspect of this hostel is its location. It is near the transport link so the guests enjoy the convenience of getting to various tourist places they are interested in.
The BGC Hostel Makati is approximately 30 meters away from EDSA via Danlig Street, a stone's throw away from Kalayaan Avenue.
PELÍCULA-PELIKULA, the Spanish Film Festival is a 2-week event and known as the biggest Spanish film festival in Asia. It features the best of Spanish and Latin American cinema to the local audience of Manila.
The Festival started the ball rolling last October 5th, with the opening ceremonies at the Ayala Museum in Makati. It will end on the 16th
PELÍCULA-PELIKULA is a Spanish Film Festival, an annual event at Greenbelt 3 in Ayala Makati sponsored by Instituto Cervantes.
Pelicula-Pelikula is a blend of the Spanish word “película”, which means film, and its Filipino origin “pelikula”, the cultural ties shared by Spain and the Philippines.
For the duration of the Festival, the audience will be given stubs with which they can rate the movies they have seen. For every five movies, members of the audience qualify to join the raffle where they get a chance to win a round-trip ticket to Spain and other exciting prizes.
Since I want to join the contest and get the chance to win a trip to Spain, I obliged myself to watch a total of 5 films. I watched 3 films on the 6th and 2 more on the 7th.
I still remember when my niece Jade told me that she was not accepted in joining the beauty contest in school. She was then in her junior year in college at Holy Angel University in Angeles City. The only reason why she was rejected was she was not tall enough.
It has been a year. My niece once more auditioned and hoped to finally make it. She is still not tall enough however, she is now smarter and much more determined. During the preliminary pageant, she had the chance to voice out her opinion and said beauty cannot be measured by height or body size because real beauty comes from within. Having said that, she made it to the finalist. A total of 9 ladies were chosen to compete for Miss SAS & SED. (School of Arts and Sciences & School of Education).
I had a great time watching the show. All the candidates were gorgeous looking. Out of 9 candidates, only 4 will be chosen as the finalists. There were more than 15 minor awards. Miss Talent, Best in Casual Wear, Costume, Long Gown and Miss Congeniality are among those which I think are most important of all. My niece didn't get any of them. She was awarded as Miss Professionalism, which I didn't even know what it was for. I thought of it as a consolation award.
I patiently waited for the announcement of 4 finalists. I was so scared when the first 3 finalists were called and my niece was not one of them. I looked at all the remaining ladies. There was one who was so tall who looked like a model, another one was so fair skinned and looked like a movie star. And then I saw my niece, pretty and smiling confidently, her chin was up while wearing her 4-inch heels shoes. Everything happened so fast and I was glad to hear her name being called as the 4th finalist.
The most important segment of any beauty contest is the Question & Answer portion.
There was only one question which was asked for all the 4 finalists. "How can a simple Angelite like you be a hero to other students?"
I watched and listened carefully to the answers of the first 3 finalists. I felt the tension and the their nervousness. It wasn't easy being in front of a large audience. NOVERTHELESS, when the time came for my niece to answer, she showed how smart and confident she was. without batting an eyelash, she nailed that Q&A portion.
This is how my niece answered the question - "God has given us the talent for us to use for the greater good. And that is what I am doing today. I'm a performing artist from Uyat Artista whose mission is to promote and uplift the culture, the language and the values of the Kapampangans. And in my simple way I believed that I have helped many people through this. That is all , thank you."
My niece got the title and
brought home the crown..!
I was totally glad to see how confident my niece was during the entire show. She was oozing with grace and confidence all throughtout the show especially during the Q&A segment. She captured the heart of the judges and the whole crowd.
This is all I can say ... A beauty pageant candidate cannot just be beautiful by looks, moreover she must be smart and intelligent enough and knows how to speak with an objective.
